Adam Hinton features in International Photography Awards

Wednesday 29th of September 2010

Dharavi by Adam Hinton from the 2010 International Photography Awards
Lensmodern member Adam Hinton has been awarded second place in the Professional Editorial Photo Essay category of the 2010 International Photography Awards, an annual competition for professional, non-professional, and student photographers. The work of all first, second and third place winners will be published in a high-quality, full-colour, hardcover International Photography Awards Book, and a curated exhibition of 45 images from the book will be shown in New York during the week running up to the Lucie Awards presentation on 27th October, at which the first place winners will compete for the title of International Photographer of the Year.
Adam's series of images depicts conditions in Dharavi, considered to be Asia’s largest slum and home to over a million people, according to some estimates.  The area is like a self contained island of poverty and lives outside of the eyes of the local bureaucracy.  For a  decade, the state government has tried coaxing the slum-dwellers to let  it bulldoze their hutments and build high-rise apartments instead.  Now  there is another plan on the table and given India’s recent rapid growth rates, this one looks like succeeding. Adam was able to visit Dharavi to carry out his project thanks to part funding by the National Media Museum.
